Kolkata police commissioner Anuj Sharma on Tuesday visited Kolkata’s Koley market in Sealdah and Posta market in Burrabazar to check for himself the prices of onion. The increasing price of onion throughout the country has become a major cause of concern for people.

Onions were sold at a whopping Rs. 164 per kg on Monday according to some reports. Sharma today talked to the common people in markets and checked whether the traders were selling onions at unfair prices.

Yesterday, chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited Jadubabu market to check the prices of onions. To control the increasing onion prices, the state government has started selling onions at Rs. 59 per kg from 934 fair price shops in Kolkata. The government has also started selling onions through its flagship “Sufal Bangla” outlets, where each family can get one kilogram of onions on producing ration cards.
