The Centre on Saturday declared Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) a “notified disaster” and announced compensation of Rs. 4 lakh to the families of those killed by the virus. The Centre will also provide aid to the infected. Funds for the compensation and aid will be drawn from State Disaster Response Funds (SDRF) of individual states.
SDRF funds will also be used to pay for testing centres, protective equipment for healthcare, municipal and police authorities, thermal scanners and government hospitals.
A 68-year old woman in Delhi died from Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Friday, making it the second death from COVID-19 in India. The total number of COVID-19 cases in India is currently 84. Earlier, a man in Karnataka was the first person in the country to die to COVID-19.
The Centre on Friday declared masks and hand sanitisers as essential commodities for the next 100 days so that states can regulate the production, distribution and prices of these items to ensure against hoarding and black-marketing under Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
The Padma Award ceremony scheduled on April 3 was called off on Saturday to avoid large gatherings.

Karnataka has decided to keep educational institutions closed for the next week. Schools and colleges will remain closed till March 22 in Uttar Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh has closed all its schools and colleges till further notice.
