Jadavpur University union room ransacked, allegedly by ABVP to protest Babul Supriyo gherao

A group of young men ransacked Jadavpur University arts’ faculty students’ union room on Thursday evening apparently to protest the gherao of union minister of state Babul Supriyo inside the campus for several hours. They were seen in lathis ransacking the union room.

Benches, computers, chairs were broken, ceiling fans were destroyed and the walls were covered with the words “ABVP” written with red paint. Some of the broken furniture were taken outside the union room and torched.

Earlier in the day, a group of students stopped union minister of state, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Babul Supriyo from attending a programme inside the Jadavpur University premises. The programme was organised by the ABVP. The students shouted slogans and prevented him from joining the programme. Supriyo stepped out of his vehicle and got into a heated argument with the students. The minister alleged that he was assaulted by students and that they pulled his hair and shirt. The students on the other hand, said the minister had behaved badly with them and must apologise.

After Babul Supriyo was stuck for several hours, Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar decided to himself to go Jadavpur University. A group of ABVP students were shouting slogans outside the university gate around this time.

Some students alleged that the police had assured them that the ABVP group would not be able to enter the premises. However, soon they allegedly came in and ransacked the union room.
