Kamal Nath resigns as MP chief minister before trust vote

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath resigned on Friday after a press conference at 12 pm. The CM resigned as the resignations of 16 Congress MLAs were accepted last night by the Governor of the state. Resignations of six other Congres MLAs had already been accepted earlier.
This brought down the strength of Congress government in the state below the majority mark in the Assembly needed for the government to continue. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has the required strength is likely to form the government now.
Kamal Nath’s resignation comes ahead of the trust voter scheduled on Friday. The Supreme Court had ordered him to prove his majority by 5 pm by hand votes which was to be videographed and the entire procedure telecast live.
The situation arose as 22 Congress MLAs left the party following the former Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia joining BJP last week.
At the press conference, Kamal Nath accused BJP of “murdering democracy” and said that BJP has not bothered about the “public mandate” who had voted for the Congress. He also accused the BJP of holding 22 Congress MLAs “hostage”.
