Kolkata cloudy with light rain, but no respite from heat wave; rain predicted in sub-Himalayan Bengal, western and north India

The Indian Meteorological Department predicts no respite from the ongoing heat in Kolkata and adjacent districts, but heavy rain in a few isolated areas of the sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

Kolkata however, was cloudy since morning on Sunday with drizzles in some parts. Southern districts of West Bengal may witness few splashes of rain in isolated pockets due to the low pressure on the Bay of Bengal. The heat wave observed yesterday in regions of eastern India including the southern part of West Bengal is likely to prevail for a few more days.

The maximum temperature in parts of the Gangetic Bengal was markedly high at 39.7 degrees with almost six degrees above normal temperature. The minimum temperature also remained almost four degrees above the normal temperature at 30.4 degrees.

Although the region recorded no rainfall on Saturday, humidity levels remained quite high at 57 per cent. The percentage of humidity in the air may rise by a few points. IMD also predicts heavy rain in parts of western and northern India accompanied by thunderstorms.
