An accident could be averted on Tuesday morning in the Kolkata Metro Railway’s Netaji Bhawan station due to the alertness of a Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawan.
A man’s hand got stuck between the doors of the third compartment of a train as it was leaving the station. Tuesday’s episode had an eerie similarity with the episode two weeks back in which a 66-year-old passenger Sajal Kanjilal died after his hand got stuck between the doors of a compartment he was trying to board from Park Street station. As the train left the station, Kanjilal kept hanging from the train and it entered the tunnel and possibly got electrocuted. He died by the time the train could be stopped.
Today however, the passenger whose hand was stuck between the doors, was inside the compartment. But the train had started moving and two compartments had already gone inside the tunnel. The RPF jawan, spotting the hand, stopped the train from moving any further.
Following Kanjilal’s death, high level inquiries have been started by both Kolkata Police and the Kolkata Metro Railway authorities. Overall safety inside the stations and trains are also being thoroughly checks. Several long and short term measures are also being worked out. The Metro Railway has decided to slap fine up to Rs 1,000 against passengers who try to stop closing doors using their hands.
However, safety inside the Metro Railway continues to be a matter of concern as Tuesday’s episode indicated.
