Kolkata Police officers are interrogating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukul Roy in New Delhi today in connection with the arrest of a person in Burrabazar in July 2018.
Kalyan Ray Barman, a resident of Shibpur in Howrah district, was arrested with Rs 80 lakh in cash and Roy’s name had come up while interrogating him. Roy had been called by the Kolkata Police authorities as a witness several times, but he didn’t respond. Subsequently, a court in Kolkata issued an arrest warrant against Roy last week. The officer in charge of Burrabazar police was asked by the court to arrest Roy by August 29.
Roy moved the Delhi High Court, that granted him protection from coercive action for ten days, so he could move a trial court in Kolkata and seek anticipatory bail. Roy was also asked to cooperate in the case and to be available for questioning on Friday. Accordingly, the Kolkata Police officers have started questioning him on Friday morning in Roy’s New Delhi house.
On July 31, 2018, the police had seized Rs 80 lakh from Kalyan Ray Barman, a resident of Shibpur in Howrah district and a case was registered against him at Burrabazar police station after he failed to explain why he was carrying Rs 80 lakh. According to the police, Roy’s name emerged during Barman’s interrogation. Four persons have been arrested in the case.
Roy has alleged that it is a politically motivated move engineered by the Mamata Banerjee government as he was with the opposition BJP.
