Kolkata Police summons suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma over Prophet remarks row
Asked to be present in Narkeldanga PS on June 20.
Kolkata Police on Monday summoned suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nupur Sharma for questioning in connection with her remarks on Prophet Muhammad. She has been asked to be present at Narkeldanga police station on June 20 to record her statement.
Trinamool Congress minority cell general secretary Abul Sohail has also lodged a complaint in Contai police station against Sharma.
Her remarks have sparked protests across the country, including in West Bengal. Protesters clashed with police in the Howrah area for two days, following which Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said why people should suffer for “sins” committed by the BJP. Internet was suspended for two days in Howrah and 200 persons arrested. The CM and senior police officers have said that strict action will be taken in this matter. Protests have been reported from various parts of the country, and two deaths were reported from Jharkhand’s Ranchi. Clashes broke out in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi among other areas.
