The city will soon have a greenery blueprint to fight air pollution. Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) was in the process of forming an expert committee to prepare a blueprint that can suggest the details of tree plantation as well as the kinds of trees suitable for the purpose.
“There is need for massive plantation,” the Mayor said.
The KMC will be going big on rooftop plantations and vertical gardens. Building owners will be encouraged to have more greenery in their premises as well as on the rooftop of their buildings. The KMC will also consider taking up a policy for offering special incentives on the floor area ratio (FAR) for builders if they go for major greenery and rooftop plantations.

Moreover, the KMC’s own buildings and properties will work out plans for more greenery and gardens. The municipal body will also reach out to government bodies such as Railways and Kolkata Port Trust that have huge properties in the city – to go for massive plantations.
The basic idea is to create green belts all over the city through planned, massive plantations.
