Various trade unions, workers’ federations and associations under the Congress and Left parties started on a 12-days’ long march from Saturday in West Bengal.
The march is being conducted to address various issues like the Central government’s labour and trade laws, large scale disinvestments of public sector undertakings, price hike of essential commodities, increasing unemployment, the ongoing economic slump in the country, among other issues.
Three such long marches simultaneously started from Asansol in south Bengal and Cooch Behar and Malda in north Bengal.
The march from Asansol will end on December 10 at Siliguri’s Baghajatin Park. The marches from north Bengal will end at Victoria House in Chowringhee on December 11.
Top leaders of the Left parties and their ally in state, Congress, will also participate in the marches in various districts. A number of small to large gatherings from both parties will also be organised at places to coincide with the marches.
A number of central leaders of the Left associations may be present to address the gathering in Kolkata on its concluding day. Ashok Dhawale, President of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), one of the main organizers of this march, may also be present on that day. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) is planning a meeting with around one lakh people outside Victoria House on the occasion.
