Various Left farmers’ unions in West Bengal have called for a state-wide protest program on February 13.
The protest has been called by Kisan Sangharsh Samity – an all-India joint platform of farmers’ unions. Convenor for the committee’s state branch, Amal Halder said that the protest march is against the Centre’s policies for farmers and the state’s dual policies regarding the agricultural sector.
The leaders of the trade unions accused the Centre of cheating farmers in the Union Budget by allocating nearly Rs.10.5 crore less in the agricultural sector than the previous year. Farmers will have tough days ahead and the decision could even result in severe food scarcity across the country, they said.
The unions will observe protest meetings at the block levels on February 13 and organise gatherings along various arterial roads across the state for 10 minutes. They plan to continue the protests after the Secondary level board examinations in the state gets over.
The Left unions also accused the Trinamool Congress-led state government of double standards in representing the real picture of the agricultural sector in the state. They said that while the state government demands the farmers’ income to have become triple under their rule, they had to start social security scheme for the farmers known as Krishak Bandhu Prakalpa. The leaders have also accused the state administration of suppressing real figures concerning the death of farmers in the state.
