The Communist Party of India (Marxist) along with other Left parties and several students’ wings of the Left parties took out a rally from the Akansha More in Kolkata’s Rajarhat today and headed towards the HIDCO More to protest the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register for Citizens (NRC).
Senior leader Sujan Chakraborty, who was one of the senior leaders leading the protest rally, said that it was important for the Left parties to go out into the streets and protest against the Act as it had been framed to differentiate between citizens on religious identity.
“This is a concept of religion-based citizenship and must be opposed,” Chakraborty said. “Who are they [the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre] to decide who are citizens and who are not?” he asked.
Chakraborty added that there were talks that the Bengal government was giving land to the Centre for setting up a detention centre in the state, and they were opposing that too. While the state government has denied this, Chakraborty said that the government had now been forced to say this under pressure.
