Left supporter who was part of Nabanna march on Feb 12 dies on Monday, allegations of police lathicharge
He was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata
Moidul Islam, a Left supporter who was part of the march to Nabanna, on February 11, died on Monday at a private hospital in Kolkata. The Left Front has alleged that he was injured in police lathicharge when their supporters were on their way to the state administrative headquarters that day, and he was subsequently admitted to a hospital in central Kolkata. Moidul Islam is a resident of Kotulpur in Bankura district.
Left leaders said that Moidul was part of the “Nabanna Abhijan” rally on February 11 called by the Left parties and ally Congress. He was in Dorina crossing of Esplanade when police used lathicharge. He was admitted to a private hospital in central Kolkata. According to a leader of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the CPI(M)’s students’ wing, Moidul’s condition deteriorated on Sunday and he was taken to another private hospital. He passed away on Monday. The party is considering taking legal steps against the administration for this brutal attack that led to the death of a young man.
On February 11, police used lathi-charge, tear gas shells and water cannons to disperse an agitation of Left workers and supporters when they were marching towards Nabanna. Several protestors suffered injuries. Condemning the police action, the Left parties had called for a 12-hour bandh across the state the following day.
