A part of Majerhat bridge in Kolkata’s Alipore area collapsed this afternoon. One person was reported dead, many injured were rushed to SSKM Hospital and Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI). Several are feared trapped underneath.
In one of the busiest parts of the city, the area was full of people and traffic when the bridge collapsed.
The bridge collapsed adjoining a railway track, though no train was moving at that time. But several portions of the bridge are in extremely precarious condition and train operations in the area had to be suspended.
Senior police officials went to the spot along with rescue teams. The biggest hurdle in the rescue operations was the lack of light as the day progressed. Rescue teams had to arrange light to continue with the rescue work.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, now in Darjeeling, said she is keeping a close eye on the situation. “I want to return to Kolkata, but it is not possible to return immediately because of the distance.”
