West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had a discussion on the change of name for West Bengal to Bangla.
Banerjee raised the issue during a meeting over lunch at the residence of Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik after attending the meeting on internal security matters in Bhubaneshwar with Shah and chief ministers of the neighbouring states. However, Shah did not commit on the matter, it is learnt.
The proposal for changing the name of the state to Bangla was passed unanimously on July 26, 2018 in the state Assembly. Initially, it was proposed that the name of the state was to be Bangla in Bengali, Bengal in English and Bangal in Hindi. But the Centre proposed to keep the name Bangla in all the three languages. The proposal was amended accordingly in the state Assembly.
However, there have been no responses from the Centre on the issue afterwards. The state government is still left guessing about the Centre’s willingness to pass the proposal.

It may be an issue in the next Assembly elections in Bengal in 2021 if it is not cleared by then.
