Neighborhood clubs can play a significant role in social welfare and the government will help them achieve this, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Friday at a sports awards event in Kolkata’s Netaji Indoor Stadium.
She promised them help required in case they face difficulties in handling their welfare programmes.
“A club can keep a locality peaceful, maintain its greenery, defend the honour of women in the area and play a role in uplifting the values of people,” she said. Banerjee added that the clubs can seek help and support of district magistrates, inspectors-in-charge (IC) or block development officers (BDO) in this.
The state department of youth services and sports will coordinate the clubs and state departments concerned to facilitate smooth execution of the projects, Banerjee said. She instructed department officials to start an online system where the clubs will be able to register themselves for participating in such projects.
