West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday demanded a judicial enquiry into the Delhi violence.
She was speaking at a party workers’ meeting at Old Malda. Banerjee alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre has been prompt in initiating investigation by central agencies into cases in Bengal, but no such investigation has been ordered so far for the Delhi violence in which 48 persons were killed and over 200 injured.
Banerjee warned the BJP against trying to spread communal tension in Bengal and mentioned that she got several BJP workers promptly arrested after they had shouted “goli maaro” (shoot them) slogan in Kolkata while on their way towards Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s rally on Sunday. She assured people that she would never let any communal violence take place in Bengal like the one in Delhi.
She also urged people, irrespective of their religion, to never take up law and order in their own hands as that may trigger communal violence. Banerjee added that BJP is inflicting violence on people in states where the party is in power.
Banerjee allotted jurisdiction of several wards in Old Malda to a select few among the local leaders to reduce the incidents of infighting within the party. She hoped that such a measure would lead to efficient administration of those areas too.
