Chief minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a rally in Kolkata on August 1 to raise awareness on preserving greenery and for keeping the environment clean. She will launch a “Save Green, Stay Clean” campaign through what is being called a “special padayatra” on this day. The walk will start from Birla Planetariam in the Maidan area to Nazrul Mancha in Southern Avenue – both green belts in the city.
The distance from Jawaharlal Nehru Road to Southern Avenue — through which Banerjee will walk along with others both from her party and the government — is approximately 6 kilometre.
Earlier this month, Banerjee had led a rally in the city from Jorasanko to Mayo Road to raise awareness on saving water.
Both campaigns – raising awareness on important environmental issues – are a good way to reach out to the people in the city, feel some. Neither Banerjee nor the Trinamool Congress has been known to walk such massive rallies earlier to raise awareness on such issues. However, party insiders feel that rather than speaking to the urban middle class through political issues, it works a lot better in trying to reach out to them through issues such as caring for the environment.
The Trinamool chief’s rally to raise awareness on water conservation was appreciated a lot, even among those who are not sympathisers of her party. As a chief minister, Banerjee wants to project herself as someone who cares about the environment.
