West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will walk in a rally today in Kolkata – from Sinthi More to Shyambazar – protesting the exclusion of over 19 lakh people in Assam from the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Trinamool Congress has already been holding meetings and rallies on the NRC issue in various parts of the city. The rally will also address the condition of the Indian economy since the Narendra Modi-led government came to power at the Centre.
Amit Shah, the national president of the BJP, had mentioned implementing NRC in West Bengal after Assam when he had visited the state during last Lok Sabha election. The state BJP has also been raising the same demand.
However, the Left Front along with state Congress lent their unequivocal support to Trinamool Congress in the state Assembly, in their efforts to stop NRC from being implemented in Bengal. The BJP leaders had walked out of the assembly in protest.
The entire stretch of 4.6 km road from Sinthi to Shyambazar five-point crossing has been barricaded for Banerjee’s rally today.
