West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee led a rally in Kolkata today to raise awareness on saving water.
She walked with her party colleagues in central Kolkata – from Jorasanko to Mayo Road. The day has been marked as “Save Water Day”.
The country has been going through an unprecedented water crisis, which turned acute in some of the drier parts, including Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. The month of June has been driest in the last five years with a rainfall shortage. The water crisis in Chennai has been particularly harrowing, with people forced to purchase water, and still not getting good quality water. The ground water level has been depleting and people are unable to take out water from wells.
There is need for awareness for people to use water judiciously so that even in the areas where the situation is not critical at the moment, can prevent the future from becoming so. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has issued a circular asking officials to ensure there is no wastage of water. The KMC will go on an awareness drive asking people to save water, and practice good habits that prevents wastage of water. Action will be taken against those who waste water, and the details are now being worked out.
