Manoj Malaviya to be acting DGP Bengal, Virendra retires today
He is the senior-most IPS officer in Bengal after Virendra.
Manoj Malaviya is taking over as the West Bengal Director-General of Police today. The state’s DGP Virendra is retiring today. Malaviya is an IPS officer of 1987 batch.
For the selection of the DGP, the Bengal government has to send a list of names for the next DGP to the UPSC, and the commission prepares a panel based on merit and seniority. The state then picks the candidate from this panel. The state had sent a list of 21 names from 1986 to 1991 batches.
However, till Tuesday, the name of the next DGP has not been selected and sent to the Bengal government. Since DGP Virendra is scheduled to retire today, the next officer in terms of seniority, Manoj Malaviya, was selected the “acting” DGP by the state government.
