Metro authorities hand over CCTV footage of accident to Kolkata Police

CCTV footage of the shocking death of 66-year-old Sajal Kumar Kanjilal last Saturday evening, was handed over by the Kolkata Metro Railway authorities to the city police on Friday.

Kanjilal’s hand got stuck between the doors of a compartment as he was trying to board a train and he got dragged along with the compartment into the tunnel. A police team is investigating the matter after family members of Kanjilal lodged a case of death due to negligence against Metro Railway. A case has been started against Metro under IPC sections 30A (causing death by negligence) and 34 (criminal act done by several persons).

The footage is an important way of looking at the details of how Kanjilal’s hand got stuck, the time the train took to leave the station, who was on the platform on duty and so on.

Police officers have visited the Park Street Metro station where the accident took place. Police team and forensic experts have examined the rake. Investigators are looking at the exact speed of the train and other important details. The distance at which the victim lay on the tracks has also been measured.

Evidence gathered from the scene of the accident can be better understood and analysed with respect to the CCTV footage. All this is necessary to establish whether or not there was negligence on part of one or more persons.

The Metro authorities are also investigating the case, with the Commissioner of Railway Safety Janak Kumar Garg, conducting a series of thorough checks and talking to persons involved in key responsibilities.
