The West Bengal government is banning the movement of buses and heavy vehicles on the Tallah bridge following recommendations of an expert committee. The decision will be implemented before Durga Puja itself.
The committee has said in its report that the carrying capacity of the flyover has reduced considerably over time and demolishing the bridge and construction of a new one in its place is the ideal solution.
An expert team consisting of officials from the Garden Reach Shipbuilders, RITES (an engineering services company), railways and Public Works Department visited the flyover to inspect its condition. While some are of the opinion that the bridge needs to be demolished altogether, RITES had proposed a gentler measure of reconstructing the weakened portion of the flyover instead of demolishing it completely.
PWD has already issued a notice on setting up a height bar on the flyover. It was said in the notice that the movement of heavy vehicles was causing immense damage to the flyover.
The proposed demolition and reconstruction would take around three years and lead to considerable stress on the traffic in the area and re-routing of traffic. After a meeting at the state administrative headquarters Nabanna, the government decided to ban the movement of buses and heavy vehicles as the immediate measure. Further steps will be decided on soon, it is learnt.
