The house of Kajari Roy Chaudhury, sister of Noble laureate Amartya Sen, was burgled on Tuesday night at Santiniketan. Both the owners – Kajari Roy Chowdhury and her husband – were in Kolkata when the incident took place at their house in Santiniketan’s Gurupally.
Ramprasad Roy — who looks after the house — found windows ajar, safe broken and things scattered on the floor when he came to do his routine cleaning in the morning, he told the police. No arrests have been made in this connection yet. Police are checking if local miscreants were seen in the area recently.
The residents of the area have said that they do not feel as secure in their neighbourhoods anymore. There are often strangers roaming the area after dark and as most of the residents are retired and aged, they do not feel confident to confront them. Also, since the area is mostly residential, streets are usually quiet and empty.
The police officers agree that these houses are easy targets for the thieves as even the next door neighbours do not usually know when someone goes or leaves.
