Pamela Goswami drug case: BJP leader Rakesh Singh, sons, arrested

Rakesh Singh was picked up from Purba Burdwan district.

Rakesh Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from West Bengal was arrested on Tuesday night from Galsi in Purba Burdwan district in connection with a case in which another leader from the same party, Pamela Goswami, was arrested for allegedly possessing cocaine. Goswami had named Singh after her arrest.

Singh was summoned by the police under Section 160 CrPC after his name came up during the investigation in the drug haul case. He had sent a note to the police stating he would not be available since he had a prior appointment in Delhi.

His petition against the summons was turned down by the Calcutta High Court, and police reached his house in Kolkata to conduct a search. His family members reportedly stopped them from entering. However, police eventually entered the house.

After he was picked up in Galsi, Rakesh Singh was taken to Kolkata. Singh’s sons, Sivam and Suvam – both in their 20s – have also been picked up by Kolkata police for allegedly trying to prevent police officials from discharging their duties. They have been sent to the central lockup in Lal Bazaar.

All of them are scheduled to be produced in court on Wednesday.
