Kolkata police commissioner Anuj Sharma has directed all police stations in the city to implement strictest measures to restrict entry of banned fire crackers into the city with Kali puja and Diwali just around the corner.
The CP has also directed the police stations to promptly address all complaints regarding forceful extortion of subscription for puja.
Banned fire crackers are those with explosion noise above 90 decibels, the sound limit fixed by the court as being safe and tolerable. Prohibited crackers are a major nuisance to people during Kali puja and Diwali every year. Several efforts have been made in the past to cut out the entry of the banned crackers in the city, but it has never been foolproof.

Manufactures and suppliers of banned crackers have taken to storing crackers in various godowns spread across the city long before Kali puja. It is from there that the banned crackers find their way into stores every year. The police stations have thus been alerted to also conduct rigorous searches in all such godowns to ensure there’s no stockpiling of banned crackers.
Each year there are a large number of complaints received by police stations in city regarding noise pollution caused by the crackers.
The CP has asked all police stations to stay on high alert regarding extortion for puja subscription and asked officials to take quick action.
Regarding the unauthorized entry of the banned crackers into the city, the CP has directed for additional vigilance along the fringes of the city and the borders of South 24 Parganas to restrict the entry of trucks carrying banned crackers into the city.
