Rampurhat massacre: another death on Monday, death toll increases to 9

She had sustained 60% burn injuries in the March 21 massacre.

The death toll in the March 21 massacre in Birbhum district’s Bogtui village of Rampurhat increased to nine on Monday, with the death of Najma Bibi. She was admitted with burn injuries in the state-run hospital in Rampurhat. She died at around 1.30 pm on Monday, said officials.

Najma Bibi had sustained 60 per cent burn injuries on March 21 when around 10 houses were set afire by a group of miscreants. She was rescued by fire bridage personnel along with two other injured women and a child. They were taken to the Rampurhat state-run hospital. She was on ventilator support and her condition deteriorated for the past one day.

Eight persons – five women and two children – were tortured and burnt to death in Bogtui on March 21. The incident is alleged to be a retaliation after a local Trinamool leader Bhadu Sheikh was killed in a crude bomb attack. Fire brigade personnel found seven charred bodies from a house. The eighth victim had later died in hospital.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is now probing the massacre followed by a Calcutta High Court order.
