The carrying capacity of Sealdah Flyover – that connects AJC Bose Road to Sealdah railway station and APC Road – has weakened much, and tram tracks need to be taken out in order to reduce the load. This was suggested to the Bengal government in a report of the Bridge Advisory Committee that was studying the capacity of the flyover.
Taking out the tram tracks from the bridge may help reduce the load considerably, it has been suggested.
Along with that, the committee has also suggested to remove the currently existing thick layer of asphalt which is also increasing the weight on the flyover. This is to be replaced with a much lesser newly laid asphalt layer.
Inspection of the Sealdah flyover began on August 15 this year. The flyover was kept closed for three days. A 100-meter patch was selected to carry out the necessary tests. Nine sensors were attached to the flyover for taking the readings. Vehicles of varying weights were stopped on the flyover and the readings taken.
The state government has taken up the program of inspecting various flyovers throughout the city after the Majherhat flyover in Behala collapsed in September last year.
