117

Dengue is back with a vengeance in West Bengal. Reports of people affected by dengue have been reported from Kolkata, Dum Dum, Bidhannagar, Siliguri and other parts of the state.

Sixty persons have already been admitted to Beleghata I.D. Hospital and another 27 children were admitted to Institute of Child Health in Park Circus.

A meeting was called on Thursday in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation headquarters on SN Banerjee Road by Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh on measures that can be taken to bring the situation under control.

The number of dengue affected in Kolkata has been reported to be around 250 by KMC while some unofficial sources said that the number may as well be close to 300. Officially, there have been 23,000 persons affected this year so far.

A KMC official died in Ruby General Hospital on Friday from dengue. There have been 20 deaths from dengue in the state till September this year.

Doctors said that deaths by dengue can be prevented if patients start medication early and advised patients to consult physicians as soon as familiar symptoms of the disease emerge. Common symptoms are sudden high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, nausea and vomiting.

People are being advised to use mosquito nets, wear full sleeved clothes, use mosquito screens on windows and doors, and to ensure water does not accumulate in and around the house.

Doctors have also said that people should not take medicines on their own without consulting doctors, and especially avoid taking aspirin if symptoms of dengue emerge.
