Supreme Court allows “green firecrackers” for Kali Puja, Diwali & other festivals in Bengal
A Calcutta High Court order had banned it completely.
The Supreme Court on Monday allowed the bursting of green firecrackers in Bengal, turning down the Calcutta High Court order banning sale, purchase and use of all firecrackers in the state during Kali Puja, Diwali and some other celebrations this year.
The plea moved before the apex court said that the High Court order was “patently erroneous” in holding complete ban in Bengal, when the apex court has allowed the use of green firecrackers in permissible limits across all states.
“The high court failed to appreciate that green crackers with reduced emission by a minimum of 30 per cent have been introduced in the local market. These are environment friendly,” the plea said. It was filed by the chairperson of a Bengal-based firecracker association and another group. The petitioners said that they were representing interests of about seven lakh families involved in manufacture and sale of fireworks. A blanket ban would cause huge losses to those involved, the petition added.
