GD Birla School announces school closure over agitation in and around school complex

Guardians have been protesting fee hike

The GD Birla School in south Kolkata on Thursday announced indefinite closure of all its classes following agitation by guardians over fees hike. The order has been implemented with immediate effect.

A day ago, the Calcutta High Court had said that private schools cannot withhold progress reports of students due to non-payment/delay in payment of fees during the outbreak of COVID-19. According to the notice issued by the school authorities, the decision to close the school was for the safety of students and teachers “till further notice”.

“In view of the present law and order situation caused by the agitation in and outside the school, we are forced to close down the school for the safety and protection of the students and the teachers till further notice. Kindly bear with us,” the notice reads.

There have been agitation by guardians following school fee hike and alleged withholding of progress reports.
