Kerala flood toll reaches 39

Heavy monsoon showers that led to flooding and landslides in Kerala has led to 39 deaths. Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, has requested the Centre for an immediate release of additional Rs 400 crore to carry out urgent relief and rehabilitation work. As per preliminary reports, the damage stands at Rs 8,316 crore.

The situation is so dire that Union Minister Rajnath Singh after taking an aerial overview of the situation on Sunday decided on the provision of an additional Rs 100 crore. The state government has also requested the Centre to announce it as a calamity of “rare severity” and to provide relief accordingly within a span of four weeks.
