#Metoo: Rajnath Singh makes a Metoo analogy for Congress and allies, social media response reflects anger at comment

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on October 27 used the #Metoo movement analogy to ridicule the Congress – a remark that has upset many people because of this bizarre allusion and analogy. Many took to social media to express their anger and frustration at a Union minister making such references.

Singh warned political parties keen on allying with the Congress for elections that they should not repent it later and run a Metoo campaign. He said that all opposition leaders that had allied with the Congress have regretted their decision later. “Later, let such a situation not arise that all the opposition parties form alliance and later when they face deception by Congress, they become constrained to run a ‘Metoo’ campaign,” he said, referring to the movement that has taken the country by storm. Women from the media, entertainment and other professions are calling out those who harassed them, and also protesting the absence of a strong system where their complaints could be taken and handled seriously.

“I would like to remind all the opposition parties… whoever has gone with Congress, it is finished, no force in the world could save it from being erased,” he said.

One of the responses on Twitter was: “After unsettling almost every institution of #India.. the #government is now making a mockery of the #MeToo movement. More power to vote them out!”

Several people took to social media to express their anguish about the Union home minister making such comments that reflected a patriarchal system.
