Two floating houseboat restaurants to be launched in Kolkata before Durga Puja

Floating restaurants have a unique charm, and are especially popular in warmer climates where a patch of water along with the cool breeze is an added attraction apart from the food.

The Bengal government’s tourism department has been coming up with several interesting ideas and a new plan is to launch two new floating restaurants along the River Hooghly. Both restaurants will be operational before the Durga Puja, officials said.

One of these will be at Babughat near Esplanade and the other in the Barrackpore region.

Each of the two houseboat-restaurants will have a seating capacity of 60 persons – 40 in the air-conditioned space on the ground floor and another 20 on the open deck. Once these become operational, the tourism development corporation’s website can be used to book tables. But prior booking is not mandatory, said officials.

Apart from the houseboat restaurants, the tourism department is also working on a floating conference hall in a houseboat with a seating capacity of 30. However, only cooked food can be served here, and no cooking will be allowed.
