Veteran actor, singer Ruma Guha Thakurta, dies at 84

Veteran actor and singer, Ruma Guha Thakurta, died in Kolkata on Monday at her Ballygunge residence. She was 84. She formed the Calcutta Youth Choir in 1958, and the group gained immense popularity through decades for their folk and mass songs, in live performances, television programmes and albums.

Ruma Guha Thakurta is best known for her roles in Satyajit Ray’s Ganashatru (1989) and Abhijan (1962), Tapan Sinha’s Nirjan Saikatey, Wheel Chair, Tarun Majumdar’s Polatok, Balika Badhu and other films like Antony Firingi, Ashi Te Ashio Na, Baghini, Arogya Niketan, Dadar Kirti, 36 Chowringhee Lane, among others. She also acted in Mira Nair’s The Namesake in 2006.

She was married to actor-singer Kishore Kumar from 1950 to 1958. Their son, Amit Kumar is a renowned singer and composer. Later, she married Arup Guha Thakurta and has a daughter, Sromona, also a singer.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee wrote on Twitter: “Saddened at the passing away of Ruma Guha Thakurta. Her contribution to the field of cinema and music will always be remembered. My condolences to her family and her admirers.”
