Water reservoir collapses in Kolkata’s Salt Lake, residents stage protest

An overhead water reservoir in Salt Lake’s CC-Block came crashing down on Thursday morning. The reservoir, which had a capacity of 32,000 gallons, is in a housing estate for Central government employees. Residents say lack of maintenance is the possible cause of the collapse.
They said that no maintenance work for the reservoir was done for 15 to 20 years. They staged a demonstration in the area, but lifted it when maintenance workers reached the place.
Few weeks ago, a water reservoir in Bankura’s Sarenga collapsed to the ground. Local people alleged that inferior grade building materials were used in its construction.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had directed state officials to take appropriate steps against the contractor and ensure such things don’t recur.
