Yashwant Sinha is Opposition candidate for President polls
The BJP is yet to name its candidate for the polls scheduled in July.
Yashwant Sinha, former Union Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government has been named the Opposition candidate for the upcoming President polls. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is yet to name its candidate for the polls scheduled in July, after the tenure of the current President of India, Ram Nath Kovid, gets over.
The Opposition leaders who were at the Parliament annexe for the meeting convened by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, unanimously agreed on Sinha today. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that “we have decided to elect a common candidate and stop the Modi government from doing further damage. At a subsequent meeting, we chose Yashwant Sinha as a common candidate. We appeal to all political parties to vote for him. He was reading out from a joint statement by the Opposition. The statement appealed to the BJP and its allies to support Sinha so that the nation can have a “worthy Rashtrapati elected unopposed.” Ramesh added that “We regret Modi government made no serious effort to have consensus on a presidential candidate.”
A committee has been formed for Sinha’s campaign. Jairam Ramesh, while reading out the statement, also added that the unity of Opposition parties that has been forged for the presidential poll will be consolidated further in the coming months.
The last date of filing nominations is June 29 and the polls if necessary, will be held on July 18.
