Fifteen companies of Central paramilitary force are arriving in West Bengal for the September 30 byelections in the state. Byelections are being held in three Assembly constituencies – Bhawanipore, Samsergunj and Jangipur on that day.
Bhawanipore has star candidate – chief minister Mamata Banerjee – against whom the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Priyanka Tibrewal. BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari had won against Banerjee in the 2021 Assembly polls, though by a margin of less than 2,000 votes. Mamata Banerjee has contested the results, legally, and the case is now on. Mamata Banerjee had sworn-in as the state’s chief minister on May 5 and as per the law, she has to win from a seat within six months.
Meanwhile, Trinamool’s candiates from Samsergunj and Jangipur are Amirul Islam and Zakir Hussain respectively. Islam and Hussain were the party’s candidates as announced in the Assembly polls. However, the death of other candidates had led to the postponement of these elections.
The Central forces are from various units such as Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
