A policeman opened fire from his service firearm and started shooting indiscriminately on a busy street in Kolkata’s Park Circus on Friday afternoon. A woman was hit accidentally and was killed instantly, according to eyewitnesses, following which the policeman died by suicide, they said.
The incident in busy Park Circus sent shockwaves among people in the area. Senior officers of Kolkata Police have reached the spot and started investigation. The incident took place close to the office of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission office.
According to reports, the on-duty constable started shooting suddenly and people around got scared. Many started running and went inside shelters for safety. A woman who was pillion riding got hit by a bullet and fell from the two-wheeler. Not much is known yet about the person driving the two-wheeler. Some said the rider fled and was possibly hit as well. The constable then shot himself. According to a senior officer of Kolkata Police, two injured persons are being treated in hospital.
The details are awaited as senior officers are investigating on the incident.
