Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated a fleet of 200 sewer cleaning machines on Thursday in New Delhi. The chief minister said that the initiative would “ensure the safety and dignity of human life”, as it would put an end to the practice of manual scavengers entering manholes and septic tanks for cleaning.

Kejriwal added that it was a ‘historic day for Delhi’. At the gathering, the chief minister noted that the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) had come up with this technology and shared it with 200 people already engaged in the job of sewer cleaning.

Anil Kumar Singh – chief executive officer (CEO) of DJB stated that with the introduction of small sewer cleaning machines, the narrow streets of the city would now be cleaned. The sewer cleaning vehicles now fitted with the machines would be able to carry out the functions of jetting and grabbing work, he added. Manholes upto 30 ft deep would now be cleaned to bring silt, slug and other waste products out, it was stated by the CEO.

Skilled manual scavengers have been provided with these sewer cleaning machines to turn them into “sani-entrepreneurs”, according to officials. Chief minister Kejriwal also stated that more such machines would be added to the existing fleet if required later.
