From over 330 containment zones in May, the number of containment zones in Kolkata has dropped to only one now. The only containment zone in Kolkata is 13 to 21 Umesh Dutta Lane in Girish Park which is under borough IV of ward 26 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
Currently, there are 23,218 active COVID-19 cases in West Bengal, with 3,087 new cases reported in the past 24 hours. Out of this, 541 new cases are from Kolkata. Kolkata has reported the highest number of cases so far – 43,084 cases altogether.
While the total figure and the number of new cases makes it appear quite alarming, health department officials have been saying that the situation across West Bengal, including that of Kolkata region, is improving. The number of active cases has been coming down – even in the last 24 hours, the number of active cases in Bengal has gone down by 172. The number of tests have kept increasing – on September 6, there were 46,505 tests done and in comparison, the number of new cases – 3,087 – is not so high, say officials. Also, the discharge rate is now quite high – 85.19 per cent. Till now, 1,54,008 persons have been treated and discharged in the state. Officials say that another indication that the situation is improving, is the fact that the number of containment zones is going down.
“Right now, the situation is well under control,” said an official.
