Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA from Basirhat North constituency – Rafikul Islam – joined the Trinamool Congress on Friday. Basirhat North constituency is in North 24 Parganas district. He took up the party flag of Trinamool at the party’s headquarters in Kolkata on the EM Bypass.

Rafikul Islam is an experienced MLA and sources said that some other MLAs are likely to join Trinamool Congress ahead of the Assembly polls of 2021. Some leaders of the RSP (Revolutionary Socialist Party), one of the constituents of the Left Front, also joined the Trinamool Congress along with Rafikul Islam.
