With a depression precipitating over Bay of Bengal, a heavy to very heavy rain coupled with thunderstorms and gusty winds will lash Kolkata in the next 72 hours. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) also issued a high alert of heavy squall and thunderstorms across Mumbai over the next 24 hours, advising people to stay indoors.
IMD predicted the wind speed would hover between 45-60 kmph in both cities asking fishermen to avoid sea during this period.
On Thursday, several parts of Mumbai including Dadar TT Circle, Elphinstone Road, Parel were flooded after an hour of moderate rainfall raising fears among people of what would happen once monsoon arrives.
Following rain alerts, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cancelled leaves of its senior officials along with stationing three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Navy personnel in Colaba, Worli, Malad for quick measures. Six Flood Rescue Teams of Mumbai Fire Brigade will be stationed at Regional Command Centres.
Meanwhile, Kolkata also received pre-monsoon showers following a depression over north Bay of Bengal. It will further intensify by Friday and will cause heavy to very heavy rains in several parts of West Bengal.
