Modi, Hasina and Mamata in Shantiniketan

Teesta water sharing may not figure in talks

Modi, Hasina and Mamata in Shantiniketan

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee are likely to share the stage in a couple of weeks from now. According to sources, Modi, Hasina and Mamata will attend the inauguration ceremony of the “Bangladesh Bhavan” at Shantiniketan’s Tagore Museum on May 25.

The meeting of these three leaders automatically leads to speculations on the possibility of talks on the Teesta water sharing issue, but sources say there may not be any discussion on the matter this time.

However, the general elections are scheduled in Bangladesh in 2018-end and as such the government there is looking for fruitful talks with India on the Teesta water-sharing issue.

If the Hasina government manages to get some positive indications on this from the India government, it will be a considered major achievement for her before the elections.

The Bengal CM has been against sharing water of Teesta river considering this might led to drought and water crisis in north Bengal. Mamata Banerjee had earlier agreed to sharing of water from other north Bengal rivers.
