Students of Jadavpur University seek expulsion of Professor over regressive comment on women’s virginity
In the backdrop of a Facebook post, the students of Jadavpur University have demanded the expulsion of Professor Kanak Sarkar over his regressive comments on the issue of women’s virginity. The students held a demonstration on the university campus seeking the same.
According to one protester, the professor is a ‘repeat offender’. Harbouring and promoting such a misogynistic mindset is not acceptable, especially in an environment which nurtures young minds, the protester noted.
The Professor has compared the virginity of a woman to a ‘sealed bottle or packet’ in his Facebook post, according to reports. The post was later deleted.
The National Women’s Commission team led by Rekha Sharma is set to make a scheduled visit to West Bengal this month. This matter will be discussed with the Vice Chancellor of Jadavpur University during the meeting. In the meanwhile, the Commission has also sought action from Kolkata Police. In a letter written to the DGP, West Bengal, the Commission has urged him to examine the matter and initiate appropriate action as per the provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
