Opposition parties to move Supreme Court over EVM doubts

Leaders of Opposition parties on Sunday announced their decision to move the Supreme Court afresh to demand verification of at least 50 per cent of votes cast in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls against the Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips.

This was announced by 21 Opposition parties including the Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Telugu Desam Party, Samajwadi Party that jointly addressed a press conference in Delhi.

TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu told NDTV, “We are raising doubts about the EVMs. The confidence of voters can be restored only through the paper trail machines.” He said many countries have gone back to using ballot papers. He has already met the chief election commissioner Sunil Arora to discuss malfunctioning of EVMs in Andhra Pradesh on April 11.

EVM malfunctioning was reported from various parts of the country that went to the polls in the first phase.

On April 8, the Supreme Court ordered that VVPAT slips of five randomly selected EVMs in every constituency – instead of just one EVM – be counted in the coming polls. The order was passed on a petition filed by the 21 Opposition parties.
