Kolkata Metro will fine passengers Rs 500 if they block closing train doors

Kolkata Metro Railway authorities have decided to impose a fine of Rs 500 on passengers who try to force their way into compartments when the doors are closing.

The fine will be slapped to prevent passengers from trying to forcibly stop the doors from closing in order to board trains. The measure was taken to enhance passenger safety following the shocking death of 66-year-old Sajal Kumar Kanjilal on Saturday evening. Kanjilal’s hand got stuck between the doors of a compartment as he was trying to board a train.

All Kolkata Metro workers – especially those related to security and passenger safety – have been informed of the decision. The Metro staff will coordinate with Railway Police Force (RPF) personnel in ensuring this is followed by passengers.

Since RPF personnel are not positioned throughout the entire platform stretch, CCTV footage will be checked regularly to implement the order.

Both Metro security and RPF personnel have been empowered to impose spot fine the moment they notice passengers trying to forcibly make their way into the train when the doors are closing.

Metro authorities feel imposing fine will improve travel safety. Awareness campaigns are also being held in stations.
