Jan 8 strike: 25 crore people likely to participate in the nation-wide strike

Ten central trade unions said that around 25 crore people across the country will participate in a nation-wide strike on January 8 to protest “anti-people” policies of the Centre.

INTUC, CITU, AITUC, HMS, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC along with several independent federations and associations had adopted a declaration to go on a nation-wide strike on January 8. The 10 central trade unions, in a joint statement have said that the Ministry of Labour has failed to assure them of the various demands of workers at a meeting on January 2. “The attitude of the government is that of contempt towards labour as we construe from its policies and actions,” they said in the joint statement.

The stand is against privatisation of PSUs, selling out of airports and VRS being offered in government-run organisations.

Along with this, about 60 organisations of students and elected office bearers of some universities have also decided to join the strike to raise their voice against increased fee and “commercialisation of education”.

Apart from this, joint platform of more than 175 farmers and agricultural workers’ unions will also extend the support to the bandh, observing January 8 as Gramin Bharat Bandh.
