ABVP supporters march towards Jadavpur University, SFI prepares to resist

A rally organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) marched towards Jadavpur University on Monday afternoon to protest the alleged attack on union minister of state Babul Supriyo at the university campus on Friday. A number of students who had gheraoed the minister however, have said that they were attacked by the minister and his group of security personnel.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankar had gone to the university to “rescue” the union minister of state. The gherao and what followed at Jadavpur University has led to a politically volatile situation in Bengal over the past few days.

On Monday afternoon, the ABVP started from Gol Park in order to reach the university gates, as the CPI(M)’s students’ wing, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) students prepared to resist them, and prevent them from entering the university premises.

Though the rally of the ABVP – the students’ wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) – comprised students and followers of the ABVP, the one at the Jadavpur University gate number four was put up by not just SFI members but also by JU students not necessarily belonging to the SFI. In fact, a number of teachers formed a human chain outside the university gate.

Police stopped the ABVP rally at Jodhpur Park with barricades and prepared to resist any further movement ahead. As soon as the police stopped the rally at Jodhpur Park, ABVP followers put up a firm resistance, with some trying to scale the barricades and others hurling bricks at police personnel on duty.
