Bangladeshi national arrested in Bengal minister Zakir Hossain attack case

The minister was seriously injured last week at a railway station in a bomb blast.

A Bangladeshi national has been arrested in the incident at Nimtita railway station of Murshidabad district in which West Bengal minister Zakir Hossain was seriously injured last week.

The arrested, Sheikh Nasim, was spotted in and around the railway station few days before the incident, it is learnt. He is being interrogated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Whether he is linked with any terror group is also being probed. He was apparently a hawker outside the station, and therefore it is not unnatural that he may be around the station, but how and in what way he may have organised the blast is now being probed.

Twenty six persons, including the minister, were injured in the incident, some of them critically. Investigating teams probing the attack came across a severed finger at a height of 14 feet and 60 feet away from the blast site, indicating that the explosive used could have been an improvised explosive device (IED).

Hossain is still admitted in the state-run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. His security has been upgraded to Z category. After the incident, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had alleged that it was a planned attack and a conspiracy to kill the minister.
